Post Surgical Rehabilitation

What to Expect Post-Op

During post-surgical rehab, our physical therapists focus on guiding you through a structured recovery process that typically includes several stages:

  1. Initial Assessment: In the first session, your therapist will evaluate your current range of motion, strength, pain levels, and any restrictions set by your surgeon. Based on this assessment, they’ll create a customized rehab plan tailored to your specific surgery and recovery goals.

  2. Pain and Swelling Management: Initially, gentle treatments such as ice, compression, and elevation may be used to reduce pain and swelling. Therapists may also use modalities like ultrasound or electrical stimulation to promote healing and manage discomfort.

  3. Improving Range of Motion: As you progress, controlled exercises help restore mobility in the affected area. Passive and active stretching exercises are used to improve flexibility without straining the surgical site.

  4. Strengthening Exercises: Once the joint or muscle has healed sufficiently, targeted strengthening exercises begin to build muscle, improve stability, and reduce the risk of re-injury. These exercises often start with low-resistance movements and gradually increase as tolerated.

  5. Functional Training: Later in rehab, exercises focus on movements and activities that mimic daily tasks. This phase is particularly important for restoring balance, coordination, and functional strength needed for work, sports, or daily life.

  6. Education and Home Exercises: Throughout your rehab, your therapist will teach you proper movement techniques, posture, and safe ways to progress your exercises at home. These strategies help reinforce your in-clinic work and accelerate recovery.

  7. Return to Activity: Once your therapist confirms you’ve met specific recovery goals, you’ll gradually reintroduce more intense activities, preparing you to return safely to sports, work, or any demanding tasks.

Surgeon's Protocol

After surgery, a surgeon’s protocol provides essential guidelines for a safe and effective rehabilitation. Here’s how it supports your recovery:

  • Structured Timeline: Outlines recovery phases, from early healing to advanced mobility and strength, tailored to your surgery.
  • Movement Restrictions: Sets limits on weight-bearing and specific movements to protect the surgical site during healing.
  • Specific Exercises: Recommends exercises that safely promote mobility and strength, often progressing over time.
  • Progress Monitoring: Allows for adjustments in therapy based on your healing and any surgeon input.
  • Clear Communication: Ensures coordination between the rehab team and surgeon to align care and address any specific needs.

Following the surgeon’s protocol is crucial for a safe, streamlined path to recovery, helping you return to daily activities with confidence.
