During static manual release, a physical therapist applies sustained pressure on specific areas of soft tissue, such as tight muscles or fascia, to encourage relaxation and the release of tension. The muscle is placed in an elongated position while the pressure is applied to the tender and restricted area for 60-90 seconds. The sustained pressure combined with a muscle in it’s lengthened state is what allows the tissue to gradually yield and soften. The goal of static manual release is to alleviate muscular tightness, improve tissue extensibility, and restore normal function. This technique is often used in conjunction with other manual therapy approaches to enhance flexibility, reduce pain, and promote overall musculoskeletal health.
